Exclusive legal aid service for women soon

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: A separate legal aid service for women litigants will be set up soon, according to the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice A. P. Shah.

Disclosing this at a meeting organised by Chengalpattu Bar Association to celebrate International Women’s Day at Chengalpattu on Friday, Mr. Justice Shah said one lawyer from each taluk and five legal practitioners from each district would be selected and trained in Acts and Rules relating to offences or crimes committed against women. The training programme would be held at the Judicial Academy.

Claiming that gender equality still remained a distant dream in a society where women were put on a par with God, the Chief Justice called upon the women to assert their right in every sphere of life.

Earlier, Mr. Justice Shah declared open a ‘mahila court’ in the Chengalpattu district court complex to deal with cases pertaining to offences against women.

Participating in the function, Judge of the Madras High Court S. Ashok Kumar suggested that ‘mahila court’ be designated as additional district court so that several cases pending before the District and Fast Track Courts could be tried at the new court. Judge of the Madras High Court T. Sudanthiram said it would be apt to appoint women judges or public prosecutors in ‘mahila courts’

Delivering a special address, Judge of the Madras High Court Prabha Sridevan gave a brief note of various problems faced by women who have taken up legal services as their profession.

Collector Santosh K. Misra stressed the need for legal practitioners to keep themselves abreast of international laws to catch up with globalisation.
