TIRUCHI: The scope for use of Ferral, a by-product of Madras Aluminium Company’s (MALCO) manufacturing unit, as an additive in the cement industry was discussed at length at a seminar hosted jointly by the company and the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Friday.
According to MALCO officials, Ferral, also referred to as red mud, could be used as an additive to the raw materials used for manufacturing cement.
Cost reduction
The company claimed that the use of the additive would help in conservation of minerals, reduce the cost of production and add to the strength of the cement.
Some leading cement manufacturers were already using the product.
The company was also carrying out research in making value-added products, using Ferral, such as bricks.
Useful as catalyst
It could also be used as a catalyst for removal of pollutants from gas emissions and waste water.
R.Kumar, Joint Chief Environmental Engineer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Suresh Kumar Rathi, Whole-time Director, MALCO, N.Gopalswamy, Director, Dalmia Cements, A.Annamalai, Vice-Chairman, CII, Tiruchi zone, and representatives from the cement industry spoke.
