CWC felicitates Sonia

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee on Friday felicitated Sonia Gandhi on her completing 10 years as party president. A silver plaque was presented to her.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was among the first to greet Ms. Gandhi, driving to her 10 Janpath residence early morning before she left on a day-long visit of Andhra Pradesh. Her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi was among those who greeted her.

“Ms. Gandhi is, and will, remain the chief mascot for the party who has enthused and energised the organisation,” said Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi.

To a question whether she would be the prime ministerial candidate in the next Lok Sabha election, Mr. Singhvi said, “You can say anything. I have said nothing. The Congress party will decide. Let us not jump on anything.”

He said Ms. Gandhi’s leadership helped the party have a pan-Indian footprint after the “dark days of 97-98” and her collective approach helped it grow. All-India Mahila Congress president Prabha Thakur said women members had assembled at the party office to request Ms. Gandhi to get the Women’s Reservation Bill passed.
