HANDS-ON: Minister for Housing Benoy Viswom lays the stone for a housing project at Beemapally in the city on Friday. — THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Housing Benoy Viswom laid the foundation stone for a tsunami rehabilitation housing project in the coastal ward of Beemapally here on Friday. As many as 31 houses will be built by the Kerala State Housing Board with funds from the Tsunami Rehabilitation Project. Mr. Viswom said the houses would be constructed before the next monsoon. Thiruvananthapuram West MLA V. Surendran Pillai, councillor Beemapally Rasheed, Additional District Magistrate V. Sivarajan Nair and department officials participated in the function. The houses will be built on 1.7 acres of ‘puramboke’ land that has been handed over to the board. Each house will be constructed on 2.57 cents. The colony will have open space and a park. A disaster shelter will also be constructed. The project also includes a biogas plant, solar street-lights, rainwater harvesting and septic tanks. All the houses are to be connected to the piped water network of the Kerala Water Authority. Each house is estimated to cost Rs.2.91 lakh. The houses will accommodate families that were shifted to the relief camp at Government Upper Primary School following heavy coastal erosion that claimed their dwellings by the seashore last year.
