District Collector announces financial aid to the kin of the deceased, injured

ALAPPUZHA: Two persons, including a 19-year-old hearing and speech impaired girl, were killed and over 30 people injured in a bus accident at the Kallummoodu Junction, near Mavelikara, this morning.

The accident occurred at 7.50 a.m. when the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation bus, which was on its way from Karunagapally to Kottayam, lost control, hit a bicycle and rammed into a roadside shop. Those killed in the accident were identified as Wagi V. Chandran, 19, a passenger on the bus, and V. Hari, 40, a native of Chennithala who was riding the bicycle involved in the accident.

Four persons, Balan, 45, his wife, Sheena, their son, Shinu, and Abdul Rehman, sustained serious injuries and were shifted to the Kottayam Medical College hospital, while 30 others who suffered injuries were admitted to the Mavelikara Government Taluk Hospital and various other private hospitals in the region.

Fire Force personnel had to toil for nearly an hour and use a crane to lift the bus to extract Hari’s body.

Wagi, who was on her way to the Ettumanoor Temple with her parents, Vijayachandran and Usha, was the couple’s only daughter. Settled in Jamnagar of Gujarat for the last 22 years, the family had arrived at their ancestral home in Haripad in February after Wagi passed her Class 10 examinations from a special school in Gujarat. The family was scheduled to return to Gujarat on Monday.

Both Mr. Vijayachandran and Ms. Usha are now undergoing treatment at the Mavelikara Taluk Hospital.

District Collector V.K. Balakrishnan has announced a financial assistance of Rs.5,000 to the kin of the deceased and Rs.2,000 to those injured.
