Five villages selected under development programme

Need for forming farmers’ clubs stressed
|
Krishnagiri: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has selected five villages in Krishnagiri district under Village Development Programme. The villages are Panganahalli, Uthanapalli, Thyagarajanapalli, Basthalapalli and Chennapalli, said Assistant General Manager, NABARD, V. Thirumalai here on Thursday.
Speaking at a sensitisation workshop for officials, Mr. Thirumalai impressed on the need for forming farmers’ clubs for effecting technology transfer in rural areas. These villages would be developed as model villages by converging all the programmes of banks and government departments, including implementation of drinking water supply schemes, rural sanitation and desilting of tanks. These programmes will give a fillip to rural development, he said.
Farmers would also be taken on field visit to expose them to emerging concepts in agriculture. Under a new scheme, NABARD will provide 100 per cent subsidy for artificial recharging of wells in hard rock areas. These schemes are meant to enhance the living conditions of the farmers. They should adopt effective water management practices to increase their yield, he added.
Mr. Thirumalai exhorted officials to achieve total sanitation in the five villages within a period of six months. A subsidy of Rs. 1,200 per beneficiary would be given for construction of toilets. Improved sanitation would go a long way in arresting malnutrition among children, reduce infant mortality, maternal mortality and prevent death of infants below five years due to diarrhoea, he said. Senior officials and panchayat presidents were present.
