Delhi may move court to get its water share

NEW DELHI: Under pressure to resolve quickly the impending water crisis in the Capital, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said that if Haryana and Uttar Pradesh did not release Delhi’s share of water then her government would not fight shy of going to the Supreme Court.

However, she expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved amicably as she is in constant touch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

Speaking at the inauguration of rehabilitation work of a trunk sewer in West Delhi, the Chief Minister said her government was committed to providing equitable water to the Capital’s residents.

“Unfortunate”

Though the Delhi Jal Board had been striving hard to get water from the neighbouring States, Ms. Dikshit said it was unfortunate that Haryana and Uttar Pradesh had not released water despite intervention of the Union Government and the Supreme Court in the matter.

As such, she declared that her government would leave no stone unturned to secure the rights of the citizens of Delhi.

Talking about the rehabilitation of the trunk sewer in West Delhi at a cost of Rs.370 crore, the Chief Minister said this would make it fully functional and eliminate the possibility of blockage, maintenance of peripheral and internal sewers. Also, the measure would increase the life of the sewerage system by 50 years, she said.

“Once these sewers are rehabilitated, all 150 km of Delhi’s trunk sewer network would be in proper shape,” she added.
