Financial aid to 93 urban SHGs

VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit inaugurated a scheme to provide financial assistance to urban self-help groups here on Saturday.
At a function organised to celebrate the International Women’s Day, Mr. Navnit gave away assistance to the tune of Rs. 23.25 lakh to 93 urban SHGs.
He said till now the benefits were made available only to SHGs in rural areas but hereafter it would be extended to the urban SHGs too.
During this year, 440 urban SHGs would get the benefits.
15,567 SHGs
There were 15,567 SHGs in the district with a total membership of 2,60,124. Their savings in banks amounted to Rs. 77.52 crore, and the government had given them loan to the extent of Rs. 152 crore.
Each SHGs was given a grant of Rs 1.25 lakh and a loan of Rs 1.25 lakh for starting self-help ventures, the Collector said.
