‘CPI (M) throwing spanner in Telangana issue’

Staff Reporter

ADILABAD: All India Congress Committee secretary and Nizamabad MP Madhu Yaskhi Goud on Saturday called the Communist Party of India (Marxist) as the prime stumbling block for the formation of a separate Telangana State.

He said taking advantage of its key role in the coalition at the Centre, the CPI (M) has ensured Telangana remained a distant dream.

Answering questions at a meet the press programme here, the MP referred to a challenge made by CPI (M)’s Sitaram Yechury at Hyderabad recently. He quoted the latter as saying “I will dare the Congress introduce the (Telangana State) Bill in the Parliament” during his Hyderabad visit to illustrate the left party’s opposition to the idea of carving out a separate State.

Talking about the demand for separate Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra raised by a section of leaders, Mr. Yaskhi Goud said the demand was being raised only to hinder formation of Telangana. Only a handful of leaders voiced their opinion on the subject to create hurdles for Telangana formation, he explained.

The AICC secretary likened the current year to the Quit India movement. He said separate Telangana should be possible during 2009.
