Distribute sites, ration cards to poor: DYFI

Staff Correspondent

Its members plan

to picket Deputy Commissioner’s office

Madikeri: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) is planning to picket the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday demanding distribution of “hakku patra”, sites and ration cards to the poor, and implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, among others.

Speaking to presspersons here, district secretary of the DYFI P.R. Bharat said that agriculture workers, plantation workers, tribal people and daily wage employees, who were in large numbers in Kodagu, did not have “hakku patra” for their lands and houses. Most of them did not have sites. The district administration should initiate steps to take back class C and D lands from the Department of Forests and distribute them the landless, Mr. Bharat said. Many people in the district had encroached “paisari” (revenue) land in the district. Such land must be taken back from them, he said. The Food Department should distribute ration cards to scores of poor people, he said. He questioned the delay in implementing the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, in Kodagu.

President of the district unit of DYFI B.S. Ramanath alleged that gram sabha meetings to select forest rights committee members were not held properly in the district. The committees were expected to receive claims from the Scheduled Tribes people and other traditional forest dwellers to regularise and grant forestlands to them, he said.
