THENI: A special project for safe disposal of hospital waste in all Government hospitals in the State would be implemented at an estimated cost of Rs.30 crore, according to M.R.K. Paneerselvam, Minister for Health. Delivering a special address after inaugurating an auditorium constructed at a cost of Rs.2 crore in Theni Government Medical College Hospital at Andipatti on Friday, he said that massive efforts were on to develop infrastructure in all Government Hospitals and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). The construction of new buildings for Government Hospitals in five districts was over. Tender had been floated for the construction of hospital buildings in some districts and administration sanction had been given in a few other districts, he added. New buildingsNow, 1,421 PHCs and 6,510 sub-centres have own buildings. New buildings for remaining 38 PHCs and 2,143 sub-centres would be constructed shortly. Six medical colleges, including Theni Medical College Hospital, would get MRI scan facility soon, the Minister said. “We have filled 11,500 out of total 15,000 vacancies in Government hospitals and medical colleges. A total 1,800 nurses have been appointed on contract basis to improve 24-hour service to maternity and child health care activities in 600 PHCs. Salaries have also been revised for them. With these improvements, number of deliveries in Government hospitals and PHCs have gone up by 75,000 this year.” Mr. Paneerselvam stated that 57 lakh people were benefited through 1,070 medical camps against a target of 9,000 camps held under Varumun Kappom scheme. EquipmentHealth Secretary V.K. Subburaj said that Rs.3 crore had been sanctioned for providing lithotripsy equipment to Government Hospital at Chennai and Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai to remove stones from kidney. Problems on outsourcing would be weeded out shortly. Special Secretary to Government P.W.C. Davidar said that Rs.8 crore worth new buildings meant for Government hospitals at Periakulam, Bodi, Uthamapalayam, Cumbum and Chinnamanur were opened. Director of Medical Education T.P. Kalanidhi advised hospital administration to utilise the services of retired staff to meet manpower shortage and streamline the work. Revenue Minister I. Periasamy stressed the importance of students’ union in the college to air their grievances. Collector S.J. Chiru and College Dean G. Sheela spoke.
