Aimed at pressing the Centre to take time-bound steps to save the Ganga NEW DELHI: A Gandhian march was organised from Raj Ghat to Jantar Mantar here this past week to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the historic Dandi March. Organised by the Save Ganga Movement, the march was aimed at putting moral pressure on the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre to take time-bound decisive steps to save the Ganga and the mighty Himalayas. The march began with recitation of prayers near Mahatma Gandhi’s “samadhi” at Raj Ghat and concluded with the presentation of ten demands at Rashtrapati Bhavan to save the Ganga and the Himalayas. According to Save Ganga Movement convenor Rama Rauta, the march was intended to convince people in the corridors of power that they must take concrete steps to prevent industries from discharging effluents into the Ganga and its tributaries. “Saving the Ganga, the cradle of our civilization and lifeline of crores of people, and the Himalayas that is the source of the Ganga, would be a major step in the direction to create a culture of development based on the principle of non-violence,” said Ms. Rauta. The Save Ganga Movement wants a massive time-bound plantation programme on the banks of the Ganga. To make the Ganga pollution-free within the first decade of the 21st Century, the Movement wants formation of a high-power committee under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.
