NAGAPATTINAM: Director of Rural Development Gagandeep Singh Bedi on Saturday reviewed the developmental works being implemented in the district under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme.

Mr. Bedi, who inspected the development works at several places in Kollidam, Sirkazhi and Sembanarkovil blocks, held discussions with panchayat presidents about the progress of the works and problems, if any. He reviewed the drinking water projects being implemented in rural areas.

He presented shields to presidents of seven village panchayats of Konerirajapuram, Memathur, Akkaraipettai, Avurikadu, Keezha Sattanathapuram, Kurumanangudi and Eesanur for achieving cent per cent property tax collection for 2007-08 in their areas. He appealed to all panchayat chiefs to take steps to collect the maximum amount of property tax, as it would pave way for the development of their villages.

At the review meeting, Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar explained the success in the implementation of the NREG scheme in the district. He said 962 development works, including creation of new ponds and laying of rural roads, had been completed so far in the district since 2006 and about Rs.66.35 crore disbursed as wages to the rural jobless workers and agricultural labourers.

The NREG scheme assured a minimum employment guarantee for 100 days in a year for a family member in rural areas to enable them to get a minimum wage of Rs.80 per day. He said the scheme was successful in the district.

The Collector said all development works in rural areas, including water supply, were being implemented effectively. A large number of works were taken up during the current year.

K. Arunmani, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, and other officials attended the meeting.
