Union Budget a fraud on people: Swamy

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Saturday termed the Union Budget a “fraud on the people and nothing but an attempt to deceive people with false statistics.”

Addressing a press conference here, he referred to Economic Survey 2007-08, which revealed “that most important indicators of the economy are on a decline.”

Dr. Swamy said loan waiver for farmers covered only 2.5 million of the 90 million households. The proposal for clearing debts of small and marginal farmers was ad hoc and did not aim at removing the root cause of their deprivation. The Bharat Nirman to improve infrastructure had come a cropper with underachieved targets.

Accusing Finance Minister P. Chidambaram of violating the Fiscal Responsibility Management Act, he said the United Progressive Alliance Government had adopted a ‘scorched earth policy’ (a military tactic, destroying anything that might be useful to the enemy while advancing through or withdrawing from an area), which would result in inflationary trends and economic collapse.

On the Mullaperiyar dam issue, Dr. Swamy alleged that the Tamil Nadu government was not at all concerned. When it had every right to raise the level to 142 feet, it was not going ahead.

On the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project, he said the State government, which invoked religious sentiments in a petition filed in the Supreme Court on the ‘jallikattu’ issue, harped on the ideology of rationalism when it came to the Ramar Sethu issue.
