BAPATLA: Fishermen from eight villages surrounding Suryalanka beach are up in arms against the State Government for the alleged move to hand over 20 to 25 acres of unsurveyed land near here to a private company.
About 1500 fishermen on Saturday served an ultimatum on the State Government to either restore the land to them for their use or face agitation from Monday.
Majority of them under the leadership of Okkiluga Venkateswaralu, president of the Fishermen Cooperative Society, Suryalanka proposed to visit Hyderabad to meet the Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao and Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
These fishermen led by Venkateswarlu and O. Chinna Venkataswamy even threatened to commit suicide with families if the land was snatched from them and the provocation seems to be a resurvey of the area to handover the site to the TCI, a private agency, which had got the land on lease from the District Administration.
About 2,000 fishermen from Adavipallepalem, Suryalanka, Muttaipalem, Potharalanka, Danavaipeta, Pattapupalem, Adarsha and a couple of others use the unsurveyed land for repairing, knitting their nets, parking boats, the land was given on lease to Tourism Corporation of India in 2003 by the then Collector k. Ramakrishna Rao.
Ban on fishing
There was a ban on the fishing in sea in the Air Force Station Zone near Suryalanka and if the land was also leased out they have to forego a large stretch of the land depriving them of the daily bread, they said. They said when they approached the Revenue Minister the latter had promised to get that order annulled. They were planning to seek support of Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana also.
