Staff Reporter
GUNTUR: A speeding lorry mowed down three persons and injured two others on the National Highway No. 5 near Pandaripuram in Chilakaluripet on Saturday morning.
Among the dead were morning walkers and workmen cycling to their workplaces.
The deceased were identified as Yerramsetty Brahmayya (43), partner in a local Dal Mill, Mogili Rathiah and Devisetty Muralikrishna. Two others, G. Ramanadham and Brahmaswamulu were injured in the accident.
According to Chilakaluripet Town Sub-Inspector T. Sanjeev Kumar, the incident took place when the driver of a coal-laden lorry coming from Ongole to Guntur, swerved to the left of the road margin, lost control and hit Muralikrishna and Bramaswamulu, who were cycling to Maddi Lakshmaiah Tobacco Company.
While Muralikrishna was killed on the spot, Brahmaswamulu was grievously injured and was shifted to the Government General Hospital.
The lorry then mowed down two others who were going on their morning walk. Yerramsetty Brahamayya and Mogili Rathiah were seriously injured and shifted to a local hospital where they died.
The S.I. said that a case has been registered against the driver, who has been absconding since morning.
