CHENNAI: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi here on Saturday and thanked him for the State Government’s decision to support the Chennai Port Trust in laying an elevated expressway from near the port to Maduravoyal. The State has agreed to contribute 50 per cent of the cost of the land, and rehabilitation and resettlement. Mr. Baalu was accompanied by Chennai Port Trust chairman K. Suresh and deputy chairman G.J. Rao.

An extensive survey of the families to be re-settled, the extent of land needed and loss of structures were carried out by consultants appointed by the Ministry, and a resettlement plan, estimated to cost Rs.345 crore, was formulated.

While the construction cost has been put at Rs.1,123 crore, resettlement and rehabilitation is expected to cost Rs.259.39 crore.
