‘Primitive conditions in Chhattisgarh’

Maoists teaching farming methods

Many Maoists in Chhattisgarh are from A.P.

KARIMNAGAR: The Maoist movement is spreading in Chhattisgarh State as there is no proper administration to serve and fulfil the needs of people, according to Maoist Chhattisgarh State division committee member of Darba Purusam Purushotham alias Murali.

“People in Chhattisgarh are living in abject poverty. They do not know how to cultivate crops or own agricultural lands. They do not have health facilities, proper roads or safe drinking water and are living in primitive conditions,” he says.

Purushotham, who surrendered before Superintendent of Police Y. Gangadhar here on Saturday, told newsmen that the Maoists in Chhattisgarh were educating the rural folk on the techniques of cultivation and producing more foodgrains. The naxalites were also helping farmers in constructing small tanks in villages, he said.

He said that the Maoists had adopted a three-pronged strategy to win over the villagers and were strengthening their military activities. They were focusing on strengthening the mass movement by forming LOS (local organisation squad) and recruiting cadres. He said that the Maoist movement, however, could be wiped out if the government reached the villages and took up developmental activities.

The Maoists were active in the South Bastar region. He said that a majority of naxalites living in Chhattisgarh State were from Andhra Pradesh.
