COIMBATORE: The State Government will release guidelines on the industrial policy for micro, small and medium enterprises shortly, according to Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur N. Palanisamy. A group of 13 industrial associations organised here an interactive meeting on the policy on Saturday. Speaking at the meeting, he said that the industries would start experiencing the benefits of the policy in one of two years when they would have availed of the assistance. The policy was announced on February 22 and the benefits would be available to units for expansion and modernisation and also to new projects started on or after February 22. For food processing units, the Centre extended several benefits and these units could avail of assistance from the State too. Land had been identified at Kandiyankoil in Coimbatore District to establish an industrial estate for textile units. The State had 5.5 lakh registered micro, small and medium-scale enterprises and almost an equal number of unregistered units. During the last 20 months, the State attracted Rs. 16,000 crore foreign direct investment. He urged the industries to earmark funds for research and development of new products. The Secretary of Department of Small Industries, P. Selvam, said an empowered committee headed by the Minister would monitor the implementation of the policy measures. Marketing efforts were as important as production and hence the policy focused on marketing too. The Commissioner of Industries and Director of Industries and Commerce, Rajeev Ranjan, explained the subsidies and exemptions that the micro, small and medium units in the State would get according to the policy. A separate policy was being prepared to promote exports. D. Rajendran, Chairman and Managing Director of Small Industries Development Corporation, said that 22 more industrial estates would come up in different parts of the State. These would be commissioned in a year. In the case of cities where land was a problem to establish industrial estates, multi-storeyed ones were planned. One such would come up in Guindy. The State currently had about 75 industrial estates. These had 6, 347 units. The production from these industries was to the tune of Rs. 9,400 crore during the last fiscal and exports were worth Rs. 2,500 crore. The Minister gave away Rs. 58 lakh to the Coimbatore Wetgrinder and Accessories Manufacturers’ Association as subsidy from Central and State Governments for the common facility centre.
