Suicides continue in CRPF
Special Correspondent
SRINAGAR: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been unable to halt the suicides among its personnel, despite introducing counselling and yoga.
Since January 1, at least nine CRPF personnel have committed suicide.
Though there has been a decline in violence in Kashmir, the stress level remained the same. Denial of permission to go home after a long stay and problems at home were seen as major factors, top officials said.
Giving details of recent incidents, a CRPF official said that on January 29, trooper A. Srikumar of 185 Battalion stationed in Tral shot himself with his service weapon. His colleagues said he was fed up with counter insurgency operations and took the ultimate step.
On February 2, another trooper Gajinder Singh, a havaldar of 49 Battalion killed himself, due to stress. According to sources, he was constantly rebuked by the company commander.
Last year, stress drove 46 CRPF personnel to suicide. An equal number were killed by their colleagues in the valley.
