SATHYAMANGALAM: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S.Elangovan has urged the Supreme Court Empowered Committee, studying into the environmental impact of the proposed Sathyamangalam-Chamarajanagar railway line, to favourably consider the demand and deliver the verdict at the earliest.

Participating at a meeting organised in this border town on Saturday, he said the demand for a railway from the town to Chamarajanagar in Karnataka and then on to Bangalore had been a long unfulfilled dream of the town’s residents and also those in neighbouring areas. Since the days of the Raj, the people had desired the railway link, he said and pointed to the demand made by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, who while declaring open the Chamarajanagar railway station in 1926 had expressed the desire to extend the railway link to Sathyamangalam and also Mettupalayam. Soon after independence the demand was again made, said the Minister referring to former Railway Minister H. C. Dasappa’s sanction for a survey between the town and Chamarajanar.

Recently in 1996, the Ministry of Railways sanctioned the scheme Rs.640.58 crores and the preliminary survey work began.

The survey, however had to be stopped for various reasons. And, after the Congress-led UPA assumed power, the survey began, only to be stopped again because of a petition filed before the Supreme Court, Mr.Elangovan said. He reasoned that since of the 58 km distance between Sathyamangalam and Chamarajanagar, only between eight and 10 km fell under the reserve forest area, it would not greatly affect the elephants or disturb the environment.

The Minister said if the project was implemented, Sathyamangalam would be better connected, the travelling distance between Coimbatore and Bangalore would be reduced by 130 km, agricultural commodities grown in the region could be ferried to markets in Bangalore, etc. Hundreds of people participated in the protest, which also saw shopkeepers down shutters. Member of Legislative Assembly from Modakurichi R. M. Palanichamy and others participated.
