Forward Bloc slams purchase of U.S. warship

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All-India Forward Bloc on Saturday condemned the purchase of INS Jalashwa, India’s second largest warship, by accepting all “shameful terms and conditions imposed by the U.S.”

In a statement here, Debabrata Biswas, general secretary of the Forward Bloc, termed the purchase “another example of India’s abject surrender to the U.S. hegemony.”

“The revelation of the CAG report in this regard is shocking. One can easily understand the impending danger of India being a strategic partner of the U.S. in the light of this warship deal and the proposed 123 Agreement. The AIFB will raise this issue both inside and outside Parliament,” Mr. Biswas said.

CPI national secretary D. Raja said the government “owes an explanation to the people and Parliament” on the issue. He said the purchase of the warship showed that India had succumbed to U.S. pressure which would have an “adverse impact” on India pursuing its independent foreign policy.
