REGS has helped over 3,600 families in improving their economic condition MANGALORE: The Rural Employment Generation Scheme (REGS) of the Union Government has brightened the lives of over 3,600 families in Dakshina Kannada district. District officer of Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) Bhaskar Prabhu told The Hindu on the sidelines of a workshop here on Friday that four cashew processing units had come up at Shirtadi, Yedapadavu, Venur and Neal Belthangadi. They had provided employment to nearly 800 people, he said. The REGS is being implemented by KVIB, in association with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Stating that the scheme had been successfully implemented at many places, he said a jewellery unit at Narimogru-Purusharakatte, near Puttur, provided employment to 40 women. Those women, who were undergoing a training, would soon start getting salaries, he said. An interlocking tiles and hollow block-making factories had been established at Pujalkatte on Bantwal-Belthangady Road, Kotekar, Ujire, Kakkinje, Puttur and Kalladka in the district, he said. As many as eight oil industries had been established in the district under the scheme. Of them, five were near Belthangady. Two ice-cream units had been set up at Kabaka near Puttur and Kadaba in Sullia taluk, Mr. Prabhu said. He said the district was all set to cross the target of generating employment for 1,443 people and providing subsidy worth Rs. 87 lakh. “The subsidy has already crossed Rs. 1 crore,” he added. The workshop was held to expose the bankers and entrepreneurs in the district to the changes introduced from April last year. The KVIC and KBIC have decided to employ one person for every investment of Rs. 1 lakh instead of Rs. 50,000 earlier.
