Lok Adalats evoke good response

Coimbatore: The three sessions of continuous lok adalats conducted at Udumalpet, Pollachi and Coimbatore resulted in disposal of 224 cases and settlement of Rs. 1.12 crore on Saturday and Sunday.

As part of the Alternative Dispute Redressal System (ADRS), the Coimbatore District Legal Services Authority in association with the State Legal Services Authority under directions from the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court had been organising continuous lok adalats in and around Coimbatore on a regular basis.

On Saturday, judges of the Madras High Court, Justice P.K. Misra, Justice R. Balasubramanian and Justice M. Jayachandran conducted the three sessions at Udumalpet in the morning and at Pollachi in the afternoon on Saturday. The adalats dealt with long-pending cases regarding motor vehicle accident claim petitions, cheque dishonour cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, matrimonial disputes, civil suites, G. Chockalingam, Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority and Principal District Sessions Judge, said.

In the adalat conducted at Udumalpet, as many as 61 cases were disposed settling a compensation of Rs. 20,75,500 and at Pollachi 44 cases were disposed settling a compensation of Rs. 29,46,750. In Coimbatore city on Sunday, the adalats helped in disposing of 119 cases awarding a settlement of Rs. 61,94,200.
