Power holiday will affect small units

Revise decision, Government told

TIRUPUR: South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association has said that the power holiday announced by the Electricity Board would weaken the small scale industries in Tamil Nadu and knitwear export, which is already hit by the appreciation of rupee.
In a statement here on Thursday, its president Mohan P. Kandasamy said that workers would lose wages for a day and the power holiday was bound to affect productivity.
Exporters would find it difficult to meet deadlines for shipments and the production cost would go up if the manufacturers are forced to use generators.
Mr. Kandasamy asked the Government to reconsider the decision.
He wanted the Government to take steps to purchase power from other States.
He said even the sops offered by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for taking the State forward in industrial growth will not have the desired effect if power problem was not tackled.
