COIMBATORE: A National Agricultural Innovation Project (NAIP) on “Value Chain for Cotton Fibre, Seed and Stalks: An Innovation for Higher Economic Returns to Farmers and Allied Stakeholders” has been bagged by a joint team to be carried out on a budgetary outlay of Rs. 9 crore for four years from January 2008. According to a release from N. Gopalakrishnan, Project Coordinator and Head of the Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), Coimbatore, major partners in this project are: the Central Institutes for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai and Coimbatore, Central Institute for Cotton Research, Nagpur and Coimbatore, and Super Spinning Mills of Coimbatore. The project is expected to enhance the economic status of cotton farmers and ensure overall development of cotton in the country so that India attains number one position. Frontline demonstrations in cotton were being further consolidated through renewed opportunities in well conceived NAIP programmes that include value-addition to cotton, besides enhancing cotton yield, higher profits to farmers and reduced dependence on costly external inputs. DisseminationThe newly proposed cotton production technologies and the best crop management practices developed by the CICR shall be disseminated through the NAIP mode and test validated in farmers’ fields in and around Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Perambalur, besides select areas in Nagpur and Sirsa in Haryana.
