Railways wins women’s title

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Indian Railways won the women’s title in the 6th National beach handball championships at the Shangumugam Beach here on Sunday. Railways overcame Delhi 17-12, 9-6.

Host Kerala finished third after defeating Maharashtra 12-9, 12-10 in the loser’s final.

Watched a by a goodly holiday crowd, the Railways grabbed the initiative early before its rival could settle down. In the first set, the Railways took a three goal lead at the start which proved to be decisive.

The results: Men (semifinal): Gujarat bt Delhi 17-14, 11-13, 3-2 (tie-breaker); Andhra bt Kerala 19-18, 21-8. Loser’s final: Delhi bt Kerala 12-6, 23-13.

Women (final): Indian Railways bt Delhi 17-14, 9-6. Loser’s final: Kerala bt Maharashtra 12-9, 10-12, 6-5 (sudden death). Semifinal: Delhi bt Maharashtra 17-10, 8-6; Indian Railways bt Kerala 17-14, 22-15. — Principal Correspondent
