Salary revision and recruitment

Employees of the Orissa government are keeping their fingers crossed in the wake of possible salary hike of Central government employees during this month. There must be preliminary meetings of employees’ association to jump to agitation mode as soon as the Sixth Pay Commission report was implemented for Central government employees.

Whether the State government could bear the huge burden if it decided to toe the Union government line on paying enhanced salary is a point to ponder. There is a very thin population of government employees in the State. For a poverty- stricken State like Orissa, the employees should have to be kept in full strength to carry out developmental works. But the sorry state of affairs has been continuing for long.

Now under the pressure of salary revision, the State government might extend the ban on new appointments for a few more years. This could spell doom for many aspiring candidates.

Special counters needed

There is no special facility for the physically challenged persons, women and senior citizens at the general ticket counter at the Berhampur railway station. They are suffering a lot during the rush hours.

The women, physically challenged persons and senior citizens find it hard to collect general tickets if they travel alone. The facility to have general tickets beforehand for places like Bhubaneswar and Puri from Berhampur station has been withdrawn.

So, it is the duty of the railways to open up a special counter for women, physically challenged and senior citizens at the station and see to it that all counters remain functional during rush hours.

VVIPs should think of it

Politicians having great life risk should not be allowed to hold their large rallies inside the medical college campuses. It is happening in Berhampur. The MKCG Medical College Hospital campus is being utilised for functions and rallies attended by VVIPs.

The worst sufferers are the patients and their attendants during the time period when these VVIPs stay in the medical college campus. Recently Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attended functions and rallies on the medical college campus.

Owing to high security around these VVIPs, the medical college campus had to be sealed for some time. For a patient on his way to hospital a few minutes mean much. And every patient does not reach the medical college campus in an ambulance.

At least the VVIPs, who claim themselves to be the greatest servants of the poor, should spare the medical college campus. They can easily hold their functions and rallies on the outskirts of the city.

Waste disposal

Selection of sites for waste dump yard for both Bhubaneswar and Cuttack cities is taking a lot of time. Though the State government has identified a place nearer to Khurda, people of the area have started opposing this.

City planners too want the site to be located in between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack so that it would reduce the distance for municipal corporation vehicles.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also failed to make its solid waste disposal unit operational. The site should be selected such a manner that no habitation should be affected by the smell of waste material.
