Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: Senior Congress leader Harnahalli Ramaswamy has said that the former MLA and treasurer of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee Shamanur Shivashankarappa should lead the party in the State.

Participating at a function to felicitate Mr. Shivashankarappa on his being awarded an honorary doctorate by Kuvempu University, here on Sunday, Mr. Ramaswamy said Mr. Shivashankarappa should have been asked to lead the party long ago. The party needed an experienced and mature leader, he said and added that Mr. Shivashankarappa fitted the bill. He would soon be brought into the forefront, he added.

Terrorism and corruption were two issues that were inhibiting the country’s progress, Mr. Ramaswamy said and added that they should be curbed immediately. He said the Lokayukta should be given more powers to eliminate corruption and streamline the bureaucracy.

Party leader B.L. Shankar said that Mr. Shivashankarappa should have made Bangalore his political base and added that he would have grown well if he had moved out of Davangere. Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University Kincha hailed Mr. Shankarappa for setting up educational institutions of quality in the district. He said this was proved by the fact that students of the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology had bagged several ranks and medals in recent university examinations.
