Madikeri: Deputy Commissioner K.R. Niranjan has said that consumers’ clubs in schools can play a vital role in raising awareness on consumer rights among students. He was speaking after inaugurating the school consumers’ club scheme at St. Michael’s School here, a press release issued here on Saturday said. The aim of the scheme was to strengthen the consumer movement and create awareness among the youth in consumer care in tune with the Consumer Protection Act of 1986. Under this, there was a provision to constitute clubs in middle and high schools. There were such clubs in 20 schools in Kodagu, Mr. Niranjan said. President of the Kodagu District Consumers’ Forum M.R. Devappa and Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Mantye Swamy spoke. Earlier, Mr. Niranjan inaugurated the World Consumers’ Day programme at the Old Assembly Hall here. Mr. Niranjan urged the people to be aware of consumer rights. The district administration had organised a food adalat, inspection of food material supplied to anganwadi centres, distributed BPL cards to the needy and introduced numbering system to LPG cylinders for the benefit of consumers, he said. Mr. Devappa, who presided over the function, said 2,741 consumer disputes had been solved in the district since the inception of the forum. Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil and president of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat Deerghakeshi Shivanna spoke. Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat K.R. Sundar, member of the District Consumer Forum K.S. Prasad, members of Stree Shakti self-help groups and schoolchildren were present.
