Making a point: Journalist Patil Puttappa (third from left) speaking after inaugurating a workshop for journalists in Dharwad on Sunday. Dharwad: Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa on Sunday said that democracy in a country would function properly if those in the field of journalism followed professional ethics and principles. He was speaking after inaugurating “Karnataka Avalokana”, a workshop for journalists organised by the Information Department and the Tourism Department at the Manasollasa Auditorium of Karnatak University here. Dr. Puttappa recalled several incidents related to newspapers and presentation of news and explained what would happen if a journalist failed to have a fair understanding of issues and places and the language. Making a presentation on the potential of the tourism industry in the State, I.M. Vittalamurthy, Secretary, Kannada and Culture, Information and Tourism, said that Karnataka tourism required support from the media. He said that while the information technology and biotechnology sectors contributed only 0.2 per cent to employment generation, the tourism industry had a great potential of generating more jobs. People should realise the potential of the industry and join hands with the Government in promoting tourism, he added. Chairman of the Karnataka Media Academy V.N. Subbarao spoke about the objectives of the workshop. Presiding over the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University S.K. Saidapur appealed to journalists not to look at issues with a negative attitude. Welcoming the gathering, Secretary of the Media Academy H.B. Dinesh said 120 journalists from seven districts of north Karnataka were participating in the workshop.
