GULBARGA: President of the Karnataka Pradesh Red Gram Growers Association Basavaraj Ingin on Sunday asked the Union Government to drop the cut-off date of the loan waiver scheme announced by it. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Ingin said that sowing operations start at different time in different parts of the country and the farmers take loans accordingly. But the Government had announced March 31, 2007, as the cut-off date for loan waiver, he said. The farm loan waiver scheme would only benefit “defaulters”, he said and added it did not cover those who had repaid the loans. Mr. Ingin asked the Government to waive farm loans amounting up to Rs. 50,000. Stating that the Budget was not “transparent”, he charged that the Union Finance Minister had furnished “false statistics” about the farmers who would benefit from the scheme. Members of the Consortium of Indian Farmers Association had suggested to the Government to have a separate budget for agriculture on the lines of Railway Budget, he said. However, Minister for Agriculture had told them that it was no possible, he said.
