Andhra Pradesh
The initiative taken by new Collector of Guntur district B. Venkatesam to provide asylum to insane people in the district is laudable. Mr. Venkatesam’s concern for the differently abled persons is known to many people and a rousing reception given to him by the visually and physically challenged people at Guntur railway station is an example of it. I wish to make a request to the new Collector that there was a strong need to make an effort to eradicate child labour in the district. One can see small children working in factories and farm fields across the district and there are many children in the district headquarters who are engaged in rag picking. I request Mr. Venkatesam to take steps to rehabilitate these children and provide them education. B.V. Subrahmanya Sastry Bapatla, Guntur district. Ensure amenitiesRecently, I travelled by Circar Express from Chennai to Kakinada in a sleeper coach. To my utter consternation, there was no water available in the toilets and at the washbasins as well. As a result, the commuters of the coach were forced to use the toilets of adjacent coaches. The litany of complaints to the authorities concerned at various stations proved futile. In the absence of water supply in toilets, unbearable stench began to emanate and one can imagine to what amount of dismay and distraught the passengers were subjected. In this context, I appeal to the railway authorities to take cognizance of the above facts and initiate steps to provide basic needs like water to its passengers on board. I. Subhash Samuel Ulavapadu, Prakasam district Rethink bandh callThe call given by the State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party to observe bandh in Telangana region on March 14 has forced the officials of the Board of Intermediate Examinations to postpone the exam scheduled to be held on that day to March 16, Sunday. Thousands of Intermediate students who are appearing for Intermediate examinations across the State and their parents and teachers are worst sufferers of the bandh call. Before giving calls to observe bandh, the political parties should keep in mind the problems of different sections and it is better to avoid bandh during examination season. The parties can register their protests in other forms. D. Satya Murthy Kavali, Nellore district. Several questionsThe decision taken by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLAs and MPs to resign their posts even before the completion of the term has raised several questions, which remained unanswered. Though the leaders resigned their posts to bring pressure on the Government to carve out separate Telangana State, they have no plans to stop contesting in the elections further. They announced that they would contest from the same constituencies they had represented. The Election Commission would have to conduct a reelection to the constituencies by spending public money and wasting valuable working hours of Government staff. The leaders should explain to the public what they had achieved by resigning their posts. N.V. Rama Rao Bhimavaram, West Godavari district.
