BANGALORE: Legislative Council Chairman B. K. Chandrashekar on Sunday observed that the greatest challenge before the country’s cooperative sector was the stiff competition from the private sector, especially in the wake of globalisation. Participating in a programme organised by Bangalore Cooperative Association to celebrate the 84th birth anniversary of cooperative leader, the late K.H. Patil, Prof. Chandrashekar said the managements of cooperative institutions should become highly professional and increase their efficiency to survive in the competitive environment. “It is not possible to regulate private sector in the global economy. Instead, the Government can support these institutions,” he observed. He also expressed concern over the low level of participation of members in some of the cooperative institutions and called for active participation in a bid to strengthen the cooperative sector. Describing cooperative institutions as the forum for the uplift of poor people, he said the survival of these institutions was a must for the progress of the poor. He described K.H. Patil as one who took the cooperative movement to its peak. That was possible as he had concern for the poor, besides being a tough and determined. “Any person who is only diplomatic, but lacks toughness cannot go on to become a State or national-level leader,” he remarked. He also hailed the farsightedness of K.H. Patil and observed that he (Patil) had already made an effort to tackle the problems in the agricultural sector in a comprehensive manner by giving attention to the chain of linkages. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes stressed the need for adopting cooperative principles in the nation-building task. V.R. Sudarshan, Congress MLC, observed that the cooperative institutions had not lost their relevance despite the entry of foreign banks. He stressed the need for strengthening these institutions. Mr. Sudarshan expressed concern over the decrease in number of rural Assembly constituencies after the delimitation exercise, which was carried out on the basis of population. This would come in the way of representing the feelings and problems of rural people, he observed. Kailasha Ashrama Samsthana Math seer Jayendrapuri Swami and Congress MLC K.B. Munivenkata Reddy spoke.
