Award for Subbulakshmi’s daughter

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Radha Viswanathan, daughter and disciple of the late M.S. Subbulakshmi, was honoured with the title of “Sangeetha Ratna” by the Lalithakala Academy Foundation at a function at Jigani, near here, on Saturday.

The former judge of the Supreme Court Venkatachala, who released a souvenir on the “Life of MS through images,” said that the late Subbulakshmi, in spite of so many honours bestowed on her, was a person of great humility.

Ms. Radha, who dedicated the award to her parents, said that she was most fortunate to have her mother sing a Meera Bhajan “Ganshyam Ayori…” to which she danced in front of Mahatma Gandhi at Birla House in New Delhi in 1947.

“After the dance, when Gandhiji smiled, people said that it was after many days that they had seen a smile on his face, as those were tension-filled days. Later, when they went for a walk, Gandhiji’s tender hand rested on her shoulder for support,” Ms Radha said.
