COIMBATORE: Women now have a forum to fight for their cause on issues concerning violation of civil rights. A women’s solidarity group has recently been formed in Coimbatore that will protect women against violation of rights. “Laws exist. But, this body will ensure effective implementation of these laws,” says Bagirathi Ramanathan, Founder President of the organisation. The action group will work in coordination with other groups working for women’s rights. A ‘fire group’ will act as a helpline and intervene for delivering immediate justice. Any form of violence against women in their personal life including family and social life will be dealt with. The group will also help them in recovering their property, especially in the case of matrimonial problems, Ms. Ramanathan adds. Women’s organisations, trade unions and similar working groups can join the action group. “The group stands for the lawful restoration of civil rights of women and assuring them of a violence-free life,” she says. It will also ask the Government to implement the existing laws protecting the rights of women. Women who are lawyers, doctors, social activists, home-makers, unemployed, or those who have been victims of dowry harassment, abuse or domestic violence, discrimination based on caste or gender and those who are HIV positive can become members of the action group. For details, contact: 35A1, East Thiruvenkatasamy Road, R.S.Puram, Coimbatore 641 002. Phone: 0422-2550794.
