Police have done well, he says
Expansion plan for police forces at the national level

HYDERABAD: Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Sunday said the Centre was happy with the functioning of the police forces in the country though handicapped by staff shortage.

“We have no reason to believe that the police has not done well. We are happy. There may be deficiencies and drawbacks here and there which we want them to correct,” he told media personnel after inaugurating the diamond jubilee complex at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy here on Sunday.

Mr. Patil said the adverse police-population ratio did not impede the law and order situation in the country. The police did not have adequate force to deal with the country’s population which was 112 crore. Its police stations were limited.

In this background, the Centre was requesting various State Governments and the Chief Ministers to provide budget to increase police forces and related paraphernalia. The Centre was also pursuing an expansion plan for the forces at the national level.

Explaining that the law and order situation in the country was better than abroad, the Union Minister said it was largely possible due to the attitude of people. They did not believe in using force. They chose the processes of consultation and understanding. They also did not take matters beyond a point nor resort to activities that demoralised the police force.

Advice to IPS trainees

Addressing IPS trainees of the academy earlier, Mr. Patil advised them not to worry about the results of their actions in professional life. They should be balanced and in control of themselves in a critical situation. At the same time, they should feel attached to everyone else which would ensure there was no violation of human rights.

Governor N.D. Tiwari and the academy director G.S. Rajagopal also spoke.
