Sir, — This has reference to your report on Marikuppam direct line which appeared on February 29. The Kolar Gold Mines was managed by John Taylor and Sons of the British from early 1880s to November 1956 when it was nationalised. The company was importing heavy machinery from England which used to arrive at Madras port. These machines were brought to Bisanatham station by rail for onward transportation to the mining site by bullock carts. To obviate this difficulty, the company approached the Railways in early 1900s to lay a line from Bisanatham to Marikuppam and join the main line of Madras-Bangalore at Bangarpet. The British engineers, gave the green signal for the project. It was shelved for unknown reasons then and has remained elusive. R.R.T. Lavi, Bangalore Kudos to officialsSir, — It is heartening to see many civic projects such as road-laying, clearance of debris and construction of underpasses being taken up in the city. Owing to the absence of political interference, officials seem to be making good use of their freedom. S. Kuppuswamy, Bangalore Cleaning mechanismSir, — Large sums of money are being spent on removal of silt from stormwater drains as well as on their reconstruction. A regular cleaning mechanism should be put in place and those responsible for creating the blocks should be pulled up. M.K.N. Raju, Bangalore Maintain bus timingsSir, — Office goers and students have been travelling with passes valid for red board busses. But of late, Pushpak bus is being sent to Vidyamanyanagar in place of the regular red board bus. When a Pushpak bus is sent instead of the regular bus the authorities concerned should instruct the staff to collect the fare applicable to red board bus and allow red board bus pass holders to travel in it. The manager of the depot concerned should ensure that the red board bus bearing No. KA 50 – F 144 is sent daily. but also make sure that the bus which leaves Vidyamanya Nagar at 8 a.m. for Shivajinagar daily and returns from Kempe Gowda Bus Stand at 6 p.m. is made regular.
