German molested on beach in Goa

Prakash Kamat

PANAJI: Close on the heels of the controversy surrounding the death of British teenager Scarlette Keeling in north Goa, a woman tourist from Germany lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday alleging she was molested on the Cavelossim beach. Following this, the Colva police on Sunday rounded up a few suspects for interrogation. They were later let off.

Police Inspector Edwin Colaco, who is in charge of the Colva Police Station, told The Hindu on Sunday that they had been conducting an intense combing operation in the area since Saturday evening itself based on the complaint by the 27-year-old tourist. No arrests had been made so far.

The tourist, who had checked into a luxury hotel at Cavelossim on Friday along with a compatriot, complained that she was taking a bath in the shallow waters on an isolated stretch on Saturday afternoon, when a dark complexioned man came from behind, grabbed her hand and pulled at her swimwear. She managed to free herself from his clutches. The man then escaped.

Home Minister Ravi Naik said here on Sunday that he had directed all the Superintendents of Police to deploy more police forces in sensitive areas.

PTI reports:

Boyfriend may be held

The police on Sunday hinted at arresting Scarlette’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Julio Lobo. While investigations have revealed that Julio had no role in drugging and murdering the girl on February 18, Scarlette’s personal diary can be a base for police to prosecute him under statutory rape charge.

The Goa Children’s Act and the Indian Penal Code considers consensual sex with a minor as ‘rape.’
