CHENNAI: There is a need to revamp education systems to keep pace with changing technology, said Babu L. Lakshman, Chairman and Managing Director, Rane Group of Companies, on Saturday. Delivering the convocation address at St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, he said in order to make learning an exciting way of life, rote learning had to make way for a self-actualised process. For this, teaching needed to facilitate self-learning. He called for the introduction of IT education extensively at the school level and for meaningful technical education. Stating that IT-led economic growth was not all inclusive since it did not take along all sections of the people, Mr. Lakshman said communication and IT, which were powerful enablers, must be used as tools to leverage primary, secondary and tertiary economic activities. He also presented degrees to graduating students of B.E./B.Tech, MCA, MBA, M.Sc. and M.E and handed awards to 45 rank holders of Anna University. College Director Babu Manoharan said of 837 students who received the degrees, 609 had been placed through campus interviews and 72 had opted to pursue higher studies. Presiding over the function, Jeppiaar, Chairman of St Joseph’s College of Engineering and Jeppiaar Engineering College, said a basic degree was just the foundation and that students must branch out to other subjects as well. He said engineering graduates needed to involve themselves in nation building. GIS labHe said Sathyabama University had a remote sensing and GIS laboratory as part of a tie up with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). ConvocationISRO Earth Observations System Director V.
