On account of the construction of a flyover at Pothys junction in T. Nagar, the following roads and streets in the area have been closed for traffic: Mangesh Street (closed for the past six months), Rangan Street (closed for the last one month) and Ramanathan Street closed since March 12. The closures have been done without any notice to the residents. No indication of closure has been placed near the entrance of Ramanathan Street. There is virtual block in movement of residents on these three streets. Residents of these streets and Rameswaram Road have to use only these roads to reach Usman Road. Road repair work is also apace on Ranganathan Street. Problems get compounded if there is rain. To reach Duraiswamy Road, residents have to use only Rameswaram Road but near the subway, no right turn is permitted. Traffic police have been booking residents using the ‘one-way’ at the end of Rameswaram Road. It is requested that the ‘one-way’ at the end of Rameswaram Road is to be removed and a traffic constable be posted at the end of the road to facilitate the vehicles coming from the service road to enter the Duraiswami subway towards West Mambalam side and also towards Pothys side. Also, there should be access from one of the streets to Usman Road. These arrangements should be made immediately. R. Sundararajan T.Nagar Ration shop woesOf late, it has become an ordeal to get supplies once in a month from the ration shop at Annanagar Godown Store in ‘W’ Block. For the past five or six months this shop has been manned by only one employee, who looks after both billing and supply. It takes nearly one hour to get one’s supplies since the employee takes 5 or 6 cards at a stretch for billing and after making supplies, takes another set of 5 or 6 cards for similar work, resulting in a big queue formation. In these days of acute unemployment, is it difficult to recruit ‘suitable’ candidates for the simple work of billing or weighing items? P.S. Natarajan Anna Nagar Old phone directoryThe Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited should relieve its customers, especially senior citizens, from carrying the old phone directories each weighing 4 kg to the distribution centres as it will not serve any useful purpose. Even assuming that the BSNL may get a rebate against return of old books from the printers, it is an unwarranted exercise as the supervision and expenditure involved in collection, storage, transportation including loading and unloading, guarding against minor theft and pilferage, accounting, auditing, etc., may not be commensurate with the revenue that may be earned. Many government departments are wasting their time and energy in such non-productive exercises in asking their staff to return the used shoes, umbrellas, uniforms etc., while issuing new ones. V.R. Sundaram Saidapet West Amber light at Nandanam signalVehicles coming from Saidapet, intending to turn from Anna Salai to Chamiers Road, are startled to find that the green ‘right arrow’ signal gets suddenly put out with ‘amber light’. As green light allows the multitude of vehicles from SIET-end on Anna Salai at the Nandanam Signal, the vehicles from Saidapet-end turning towards Chamiers Road from Anna Salai are rudely surprised to encounter the vehicles opposite even before turning full to Chamiers Road. As the restive vehicles near Defence Quarters at the Nandanam Signal get started and moving even before they get the green signal, there is every possibility of collision with vehicles turning towards Chamiers Road from Anna Salai because of such sudden stoppage of green ‘right arrow’ light. Will the traffic police look into this and remedy the situation? J. Manohar Singh, Adambakkam Postal cover shortageThe post office at K. K. Nagar frequently falls short of 5-rupee postal covers. The stock reply is “we can sell only when we get supply”. One has to purchase stamp for Rs. 5 and spend one more rupee to purchase a cover from outside. At least, the post office should arrange to supply empty covers free of cost. Pathamadai Mani Sundaram, K.K. Nagar Delay in LPG suppliesThe residents of Tiruvallur are put to hardship as there has been an inordinate delay in getting Indane LPG refill supplies since December last. The waiting period has risen to more than 10 days beyond the mandatory three-week gap between two supplies. Distributors’ reply has been they are getting inadequate supplyies. Can the IOC augment its supplies? K. Ravichandran, Tiruvallur Transformer neededWe, residents of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, South Mada Street Extn., (Corporation Zone 4, Division-63), Villivakkam, are facing great difficulties owing to low voltage and power failure every day. Many students in our area are preparing for Board and other examinations. Our area is surrounded by colonies such as Souparnika Avenue, Vijayalakshmi Puram. We want a separate transformer to be installed in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar to solve all these problems.
K.R.Mahendra Varman Villivakkam. Music groupThe formation of All India Musicians group is laudable, It is gratifying to note that the group consists of eminent senior vidwans from south and north India, The electronic media coverage of Carnatic music is poor. It would be a step in the right direction to establish an exclusive classical music TV/FM radio channel with the cooperation of corporates. A.Jagannathan Nanganallur
