MADURAI: The realignment of electoral rolls and reorganising polling stations, necessitated by the notification of the Delimitation Commission’s recommendations, will be completed by June, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said on Sunday.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress thus far, he told reporters here that it was a time-consuming process, as it had to be done constituency-wise.

The recommendations of the Delimitation Commission of the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly Constituencies, set up in 2002 with Kuldip Singh, a retired Judge of the Supreme Court as its chairperson, was approved by President Pratibha Patil on February 19.

Following the revision, the District Electoral Officer would verify the rolls to ensure no eligible voter was left out.

Five regional observers were appointed to check the rolls and ensure they conformed to the format stipulated by the Election Commission.

Reorganising booths would decongest them in places where such a need was felt, and keep them at locations where everyone could vote without fear, Mr. Gupta said.

Mr. Naresh Gupta said the size of voter identification cards was reduced, and the new cards would fit into the wallet.

Besides, they would also carry the date of birth rather than the age which was displayed in the old cards.

He chaired a review meeting which was attended by Collectors S.S. Jawahar (Madurai), R. Vasuki (Dindigul), R. Kirilosh Kumar (Ramanathapuram), Pankaj Kumar Bansal (Sivaganga), V. Chandrasekaran (Virudhunagar) and P. Amudha (Dharmapuri).
