Coimbatore: Police stations functioning from rented accommodations across Tamil Nadu would be provided with own buildings in ten years, said Director-General of Police (Law and Order), P. Rajendran. He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the residential quarters for four sub-inspectors and 76 personnel in other ranks on an outlay of Rs 2.90 crore at the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion at Kovaipudur on Sunday. Additional Director-General of Police, Armed Police, Anoop Jaiswal, Inspector-General of Police, Armed Police, S. Rajendran, Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Seema Agrawal and others took part. Mr.Rajendran told newsmen that 5,000 residential accommodations for personnel were being constructed on an outlay of Rs 60 crore. These quarters would be for personnel in all ranks, right from constable to Deputy Superintendent of Police. Construction work for an office and residential accommodation for the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, was under way. He said that compared to other States, Tamil Nadu was far ahead in providing residential quarters to police personnel. Though the State had a 1,000-km long coastline, the vigil maintained by the Coastal Security Group and 60 check-posts of police ensured maintenance of law and order and prevention of infiltration. The DGP said that an exclusive force at the disposal of the Superintendents of Police of coastal districts would be created for strengthening coastal security. Pointing out the increasing naxal menace in various other States, he said that naxalism had been effectively prevented in the early stages in Tamil Nadu. As for the functioning of temporary police recruit training schools at various police ranges, Mr. Rajendran said an exclusive training school would start functioning at Omalur next month.
