PATNA: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has reshuffled as many as 64 civil officers. Mr. Kumar changed not less than 29 district magistrates, leaving just nine others in their place in the 38-district State. He also switched 16 departmental secretaries. The exercise took many by surprise as the legislature is in session. The Opposition had charged in the Assembly that district magistrates were demanding commission for executing schemes under the funds earmarked for legislators and MPs. Even members belonging to the NDA joined the chorus. Mr. Kumar had no option but to concede an enquiry into the matter. Legislators, particularly those belonging to the BJP and the JD (U), were critical of their own government that officials were mistreating them and that their grievances were not being heeded to.
