DAVANGERE: The two-day Durgambika festival here, scheduled to begin from Tuesday, will see a large number of devotees from different parts of the State. It is held once in two years. People of all castes participate in the festivities. Animal sacrifice is the only controversial aspect of the festival. Although the Government has appealed against this, the people are in favour of continuing what is seen to be a centuries old tradition in the region. Wrestling competitions, “Kurikalaga” (ram fight) and various other cultural programmes will be held for a week from Tuesday. Religious discourses have been organised as part of the celebrations. The district administration has made arrangements for supply of drinking water to the large number of devotees. Tight security arrangement has been made and the police have been told to keep a vigil on animal sacrifice.
