dated March 18, 1958: Soviet proposals

President Tito said on March 16 Yugoslavia would like to take part in the projected top-level East-West talks. Marshal Tito, who was addressing a crowd of more than 200,000 at the close of the Yugoslav Legislative election campaign in Belgrade, said the Soviet proposals in this connection were constructive and he criticised those who “are trying to sabotage it.” Marshal Tito said he was alarmed by the international situation, particularly in Indonesia and the Middle East. He likened the Indonesian affair to that which led to the Spanish civil war in the 1930s. Marshal Tito criticised France’s proposal for a Mediterranean pact but said he believed the merger of Syria, Egypt and Yemen “was a positive step.”
