Women need to voice their problems, say student organisers

Towards better awareness: Students take a look at the posters displayed at the exhibition on ‘Prevention of violence against women’ at Pondicherry University.

PUDUCHERRY: A group of students at Pondicherry University have put up a poster exhibition on ‘Prevention of Violence Against Women’ to spread awareness among women of the need to voice their problems.

The students, all M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars of the Centre for Women Studies, have attempted to highlight the key issues related to violence against women through the exhibition.

“Violence against women is a major social issue. The poster exhibition is meant to highlight the issues relating to women’s rights,” reader and coordinator of Centre for Women’s Studies V.T. Usha said.

She said majority of women did not speak out, but remained silent. “The conviction rate of any crime of violence against women is only five per cent. Most of the cases do not even reach the courts, as women do not voice their problems,” she pointed out.

The poster exhibition has depicted various forms of violence such as domestic violence, infanticide, foeticide and sexual harassment.

“The posters draw attention to the fact that social attitudes need to change to prevent violence against women. It aims to sensitise both men and women to look at issues,” Ms. Usha pointed out. “Through the exhibition, we want to create awareness among women. There are laws to protect them and they should be aware of it,” Arpita Mishra, an M.Phil student at the Centre, said.

It also provides information on legal help available to women subjected to domestic violence. “At present, we see so many cases of violence against women. We want to make the younger generation aware of the problem so that we can prevent such violence in the future,” another M. Phil student, D. Arul, said.

The exhibition, inaugurated on March 10, would be on throughout the week at the university.
