Traffic jam

Kumbakonam is one of the important pilgrim centres in Tamil Nadu and is the commercial capital of Thanjavur district. At present, buses from Thanjavur, Mayiladuturai and Chennai directions enter Kumbakonam Bus Stand through Nall Raod, CRC Main Road and John Selvaraj Nagar. Because of heavy vehicular traffic, there is always a traffic jam there. To avoid this problem, it is suggested that the buses coming from Thanjavur and Tiruchi direction should be allowed to enter the bus stand through the newly laid Fish Market Road and New bus stand road. It will reduce the travelling distance and eliminate traffic congestion in Nall Road junction. There will be free flow of traffic in Nall Road, CRC Main Road and John Selvaraj Nagar areas. The traffic authorities may consider this suggestion and do the needful in public interest.

ATM woe

Recently it was reported that a customer was held up inside a ATM centre in Chennai for nearly five hours as the door could not be opened due to a technical snag. This is a serious thing to happen to a customer. Bank authorities should arrange for round-the-clock manual security for ATM centres and provide emergency alarm system inside the ATM centres in the best interest of the customers.

Guage conversion

The broad guage conversion works will be delayed by at least 12 months due to various factors. What people need is alternative arrangements like extension of trains from Tiruchi with additional bogies/compartments. We appreciate green latrines, upgrading platforms and passengers safety, etc., provided the trains are run on this route. I request railways to give top priority for early completion of conversion.

Frequent accidents

Frequent road accidents reported in and around Mayilduturai town is causing anguish to the people. The congested and narrow roads were responsible for the accidents. The town’s infrastructure is grossly inadequate for the phenomenally growing population and drastic increase in vehicles. The entire stretch of Gandhiji Road from Railway Flyover to bus stand is a scene of haphazard parking of vehicles. Moreover, the pavements have all been encroached.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting scheme (RWH) was implemented a few years back to gather rainwater from the roofs. Most tanks intended for collecting the rainwater are being used as dustbins.

In some other cases, the channels for routing the water are blocked with soil and waste. The RWH facilities at some Government buildings and offices are not maintained properly. Due to these, the objective of the scheme to increase the groundwater level may not be achieved. Filtration systems at most places are inappropriate. State Government should strictly implement the scheme. Public awareness campaigns on the significance of the scheme might be launched.

Higher studies

If the earning father or mother of students studying from standards I to XII in a government or government-aided school dies or is incapacitated permanently, the State Government offers Rs.50,000 for their higher studies. If the students after the school final examination pursue higher studies, necessary certificates from the institutions concerned should be obtained to release the FD amounts in 3 to 4 equal instalments, which should be spent for the college studies. If they discontinue studies, after 12 years of school studies plus 3 years of college studies, viz.15 years, the investments should be paid to them in one instalment. If the students complete school final and cannot pursue college studies after a lapse of three years, the amount should be paid to the students concerned. This is a laudable scheme and should be continued.

Fare unfair

Though the Railway budget is generally appreciated by one and all, the gender discrimination in fare concession to senior citizens is not relished and entertained by the people. Fifty per cent concession in fares should have been given to senior citizens of both sexes.

The gauge conversion work between Mayiladuthurai and Villupuram should be completed before April this year and inaugurated on Tamil New Year Day which will be a boon to Kumbakonam people.

K. Santhanam,

Kumbakonam
