Koderma: The Jharkhand Government has evinced interest to take over an “ailing” hospital here, which had been built by the Centre exclusively for treating mica miners of the state. The State Government had twice written to the Centre requesting it to handover the hospital to treat all sections after very few people could benefit from it following closure of most of the mica units in the State. “The government opened this hospital exclusively for mica miners. Now with most of the mica units ceased to function, the hospital attracts very few patients.... as it cannot attend to private patients,” Chief Medical Officer of the hospital, P.K. Das said. Once a hospital having costly infrastructure including 100 beds, it did provide treatment to mica miners and their families and remained in good condition till 1992, he said. Stating that Rs. 55 lakh is spent every month towards staff salary and medicines, Dr. Das said, earlier the hospital used to get cess from mica industry, which has drastically slashed after the sector was in dire straits. The locals have been demanding the State Government to take over the hospital and give a face-lift to treat patients from all sections. Late Jagjivan Ram had laid the foundation stone for the hospital when he was the labour minister. -- PTI
