Watch out for killer vegetables

Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: How safe are the vegetables we consume every day? Most of them are, in fact, unfit for human consumption, according to sources in the Department of Agriculture. Consumption of vegetables without washing them properly could even be fatal, they said.

Senior officials of the department said most farmers sprayed “Monocrotophos” on vegetables. Monocrotophos is a banned pesticide which has more than 30 days of residual toxins. The Government had banned the use of spray on vegetables taking into consideration the adverse effects on people’s health. Monocrotophos is being sprayed on greens, spinach, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, radish and some other vegetables. The Agriculture Department has asked people to wash vegetables in hot water.
